Description
The Old Church House is one of South Devon’s special places. A Grade II* listed inn nestled in a quiet hamlet, close to Dartmoor, South Devon’s beaches and many places of interest. The inn has provided a haven for travellers since the 13th century, it retains many original features, while offering home comforts suited to the 21st century.
At the heart of the inn is the atmospheric oak panelled bar, which can be stocked with your choice from a wide range of draught products and local specialties. The open fire and cushioned pews complete the cosy environment.
Wandering from the bar, there are a series of intimate seating areas leading to the lounge, where you can enjoy a second open fire, browse a wide selection of books, or simply relax on one of the sofas or armchairs. A snooker/pool table and darts alley provide more options to enjoy your unique surroundings. The ancient history of the inn is ever present: the lounge houses one of the oldest bread ovens in England, the old cast iron agricultural implements and pots still hang in the fireplace and the bar’s oak screen was salvaged from a ship of the Spanish Armada. Indentures from Henry VIII and Elizabeth I give testament to previous visitors to the inn.
The split-level dining areas allow multiple options for dining, meeting, and lingering over port and cheese. A laundry with Miele equipment and downstairs toilet facilities completes the leisure areas.
The property boasts a large commercial standard kitchen with a range style cooker, commercial grade oven and powerful microwave ovens, along with ample fridge and freezer space and a dishwasher. If you’d like the catering taken care of, we work with several local chefs, and can help you source your perfect meal, buffet or party. We can also supply celebration cakes, along with other sweet treats for afternoon tea.
The inn’s 11 bedrooms are individually styled, based on Dartmoor wildlife. All are ensuite, with TV and kettle. We can supply cots and bedding on request. One room is adapted for less mobile guests. Bedrooms are spread over 2 wings, joined at first floor level by a cross passage, guarded by the inn’s permanent guest- Lady Mildred (don’t worry, beneath that evening gown she is muslin and stuffing...). Ironing facilities and hair dryers are available in the utility area.
Outside, there is a peaceful lawned beer garden with fruit trees, providing fresh plums and apples in season, along with a selection of herbs for your table, or G&T. A decked back garden offers complete seclusion, overlooking fields and our friendly neighbours- Devon Ruby Red cows. Pheasants, hares, owls and bats are also regular visitors. There is a large, gated car park and a small shed where bikes can be stored.
The inn is strictly non-smoking, and we do not cater for Hen and Stag parties.
We offer a range of additional services including room servicing and babysitting; we can also help arrange music from local bands, brewery and cider farm visits, Dartmoor tours and even a private paranormal investigation with one of Devon’s most prominent guides.
The inn welcomes up to two well behaved dogs at an additional charge of £50 per dog per stay.
