Description
Set in the stunning coastal village of Craster, Northumberland is this beautifully welcoming family home that is Harbour House. Overlooking the harbour, this traditional cottage sets the scene for your time here, suiting a family holiday or a friends retreat. There is a fully ‘decked’ enclosed garden to the front (across the lane) for enjoying the sun or maybe bird watching or reading. The much-acclaimed ‘Top 10 best walks’ Northumberland Coast path runs directly between the house and the harbour. To the north is the grassy path along the rocky shoreline to Dunstanburgh Castle and beyond, while to the south, through the village, the path leads to Cullernose Point and on to Howick Bay, passing the barley sugar twisted chimneys of the Bathing House.
Parking for 2 cars at Harbour House is in the gap beyond the house. You are encouraged to use the back door coming from your car to reach the keysafe. The porch has an ottoman and worktop, plus hanging space, to begin unpacking on arrival.
Beyond the porch, off which is the boiler room, you turn left into the hallway with a bathroom and stairs to the first floor. Continue into the Kitchen, (mind the step) which opens into the Dining Room with views out to sea. The table here seats 10, with plenty of room for the 7 guests in the house. A high chair is available should you need it. The dining table is also much enjoyed by guests for card and board games and jigsaws. The large Living Room, with an open fire, leads off the Dining Room. There is comfy seating for 8 and a smart TV.
Upstairs there are three good sized bedrooms and a smaller single room. One is super king and another a king room, both looking east over the harbour. A twin room and the single room, along with two bathrooms round off upstairs in this homeliest of holiday lets.
The front decked garden space makes a stunning al fresco area, particularly in the gorgeous summer months when the sun is high and the garden is vibrantly luscious. The back patio area, which catches the evening sun, has the BBQ.
Craster has plenty of things to do and see, so make sure to take in the sights with stunning views of the bay. The Jolly Fisherman Inn, Shoreline cafe and Pipers Pitch offer a varied menu, and Embleton is 8 minutes drive north where you can stock up at the local store, while Alnwick, 6 miles away, has a number of supermarkets. Dunstanburgh Castle sits nearby, but whether it be history or a spot of golf at Castle's Golf Course, there’s always something to find at in the ‘Northumberland Coast Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty’. Just south you'll find Howick Hall, built in 1782 and famously connected to the Grey family, and any tea enthusiast will have heard of Earl Grey; Open during the spring and summer, a must-see for any nature enthusiast too with its delightful gardens and stunning rhododendrons and azaleas on the walk down to the sea.

the house could do with a little TLC and modernising - it still has the feel of a B&B upstairs and felt a little damp in places (there was a huge birds nest in the front guttering that wouldnt help). the info book is a little out of date and we could have been advised about the works going on in the street and next door - the garden space needs a good tidy up to be used

Perfect for families and walkers as there is the fabulous Dunstanburgh Castle near by. Surrounded by very good restaurants in the nearby villages. The house itself was roomy for all 6 of us with our well behaved dog. The instructions to get in to the property were easy to understand. We especially loved playing the board games (which were left in the house for us to use), whilst sitting over looking the harbour in the private patio area. Thank you so much to the hosts, it was a privilege to stay in your beautiful home, looking forward to returning in the near future!

Very well equipped and the comfiest beds ever. The weather was awful but there’s so much room in the house and there was lots of games in the cupboards that it really didn’t matter.

The village location was perfect. The cottage is right in the heart of the small village overlooking the harbour. We enjoyed the convenience of the private parking and the on your doorstep scenery and vistas. It was great that the pub was a 2 minute walk away in one direction and in the other Dunstanburgh Castle was less than 2 miles away on a lovely coastal walk across fields with views of the castle and cliffs all the way. The picturesque harbour across the road was visible from the main bedrooms and the famous smokehouse of craster was opposite the pub. We loved the location. The inside of the house was very spacious and had everything we needed.

It was a shame that the garden wasn't suitable for the children to play in. The back patio had bits of wood lying about and extremely thorny bushes and the front garden is elevated with a drop to the harbour side and not enclosed enough.

Hi Jane,
First and foremost thank you ever so much for taking the time to share your feedback with us! We are so pleased to hear you had a wonderful time & managed to explore the local area. It certainly is a character cottage in such a picturesque location. In regards to your comments about the garden we are a little confused as the front garden is fully enclosed and very safe, with decking laid over it all. It is also double width, where the other gardens are single. We understand there is a neighbouring property which has no fence so trust this was perhaps the confusion. Many thanks once again for taking the time to share this feedback we are so glad you had a well- deserved break! Many thanks, Finest Retreats |

The accommodation in Craster Northumbria was excellent in all respects, especially the large deck located at the front house which was overlooking the harbour was heaven sent for our grandchildren. As we have visited Craster before usually twice a year, we will inevitably now use this provider as our go to company. The house came up to our expectations in regard of facilities, space, rooms and parking, we could not find fault. Thank you. {Redacted], Fife. |
