Description
Lighthouse Cottage is a fabulous, one-of-a-kind property situated at the southern tip of Cumbria in the heart of the South Walney Nature Reserve. Surrounded by wildlife and with incredible sea and nature reserve views it's the perfect location for a memorable getaway.
The nature reserve is windswept and rugged, home to a wonderful diversity of bird species making Lighthouse Cottage popular with bird-watchers and wildlife enthusiasts. Grey seals can also be spotted swimming in the sea at high tide! The sunrises and sunsets are simply stunning and guests will love the experience of being immersed in nature.
Inside, the cottage does not disappoint - it is furnished to a high standard with a contemporary feel with many thoughtful touches guests will love.
On the ground floor there are three bedrooms and family bathroom. The master bedroom has a king-sized bed and luxury en-suite with walk-in double shower. For the lazy morning lie-ins, there's a mounted TV which can be watched from the bed.
The second bedroom - 'The White Room' - has a comfortable king size bed. It too has a wall-mounted TV which can be watched from the bed.
Bedroom number three - 'The Red Room' - has zip link twins, which can also be configured as a king-size double on request.
The spacious family bathroom has a large shower over bath in a contemporary style. There is also a handy utility room with a washing machine and tumble dryer.
The main living quarters can be found up the stairs and make the most of the wonderful views. Binoculars and bird watching guidebooks can provide hours of entertainment from the dunes around the reserve with guests able to spot eider ducks, willow warbler and sandwich terns in the Spring or nesting gulls, eiders, oystercatchers ringed plovers and sandwich terns in the summer. In the cooler Autumn and Winter months, guests can keep warm using the beautiful log burner after the long walks to spot the waders and wildfowl.
The fully-fitted kitchen has all the amenities and equipment to cook up a feast during the self-catered stay including a Krups/Nespresso coffee machine and an integrated dishwasher.
Outside, there is ample off-road parking for several cars and there are plenty of trails to explore across the dunes. The Hide is next door and is let separately - both can be booked together to sleep 8.

Perfect for unwinding in nature. Very cosy and clean and good for a family stay. It is a remote place so pubs and shops are a drive away, however this adds to the peacefulness.

Especially liked the lack of people and just to have time to observe the beautiful area and made the use of every minute. Although we only had one good sunrise, to walk up by the Groyn Hide and walk along the top early morning was a joy. Lovely sky scapes. The accommodation was by far the best place we have stayed in so far. It was homely and very comfortable (heating was on when we arrived) and furnished to a very high standard. Comfy beds and nice clean linen and towels. Views especially from the kitchen window were excellent. We found the South and North Island to be completely different from each other but both beautiful in their own way.
We would loved to have stayed longer and genuinely sad to leave. Last but not least thank you for the Proseco, went down a treat with our first meal!! |

Only two minor issues, we couldn't find any dish washer tablets and so manually washed up and batteries needed replacing in one of the heating controllers. Other than that only praise to Debby and Martin and the Finest Retreats Team.

main bathroom shower did not work ,it lit up but never worked but it did not bother us because there it a fantastic double shower in the ensuite , im not complaining just an observation these appliances go wrong, i rent properties myself .

Amazing, just book it now…Number 2 Light house cottage was a real home from home. The owners used to live there so everything is of the nicest, best quality. Not just brought to fill a holiday let.

Amazing, just book it now…Number 2 Light house cottage was a real home from home. The owners used to live there so everything is of the nicest, best quality. Not just brought to fill a holiday let.
The beds are all comfy, master bedroom has a low, soft memory foam bed and not what we are used to but we had lovely nights sleep there. Velux windows allow you to look at the sky before you close the fitted blinds. The double shower is fab too & Sonos sound system great. DVD player with it so take a few films. The track (sea road) is a shock first time as bumpy, call at nature reserve centre for a comfort break just before the gateway to it!!! 2nd & third trip ok by the 4th I was on ‘top gear’ and loving it. Clarissa (lovely neighbour if you get chance to say hello)who lives at number one has an ordinary car and bombs along fine. There is a Tesco 5 mins away as the crow flies …. but 30 mins as a ‘top gear driver’ so write a list as you won’t be popping out for what you’ve forgotten!! Walney is beautiful, lots of bird watching, murmurations & seals 1pm to 4pm from hide near by, got a nearer view on Piel island ferry £15 each with Steve the retired lifeboat man. Lunch on Piel was good, pie, pasty etc all home cooked. Cows and sheep roam freely which is lovely to see, lots of beautiful wild flowers, Clarissa showed us where to find the Walney geranium. Lots to do and see nearby the Dock museum was good and Lake District easy to drive for a day out. Fantastic 10/10 |

So really all perfect, we would defiantly stay again in the future.
If only two people staying The Hide next door is lovely and you get the nice garden with summer house shed included. Good if disabled see more

As a family we enjoy staying in unquie placed as this did not dissapoint, it was brilliant. The lighthouse is remote, peaceful and full of wildlife and a great getaway from the hustle and bustle of modern life.

The house had everything we needed, we were given a lovely welcome package, great directions and good advice before our stay. The sun sets into evening were amazing so was watching the seals at high tide. Would highly recommend this property. |

From Black Combe to the Lake District Fells all the way to Blackpool! The sunrises and sunsets revealed a kaleidoscope of colours, ever shifting and becoming centre stage. The Nature Reserve is a gem and we felt privileged to be able to watch seals from the hide closest to the cottage. The cottage itself was perfect: immaculately clean and with everything we needed and more. The efficient log burner, underfloor heating and exceptional bathrooms set the property apart from the rest. Whilst the Nespresso machine and well equipped kitchen ensured we felt at home. Lighthouse cottage provided us with an experience we will never forget - thank you.

The highly sophisticated sound system was unnecessary we felt, whilst heat in the on suite bathroom is necessary and still not working dispite someone mentioning it in the guest book during a February visit. We used the family bathroom. The vax cleaner mounting fell off the wall as the rawplugs were not secured correctly and a couple of smaller saucepans would have been useful. We enjoyed the quiet, the landscape, the seals singing on an evening but not a place we would return to.

This is an amazing property so close to Barrow but a million miles away once you have entered the Reserve. I grew up in the Town but had never been to this part of Walney Island. The access road, once in the Reserve, is a good 15 mins bumpy drive. see more

The house is well stocked with high quality kitchen / cooking facilities and a very good TV and sound system. Bathrooms are all excellent. This is a perfect place to gather with family / friends and just enjoy the surroundings and each other's company. Stunning!

Whilst we enjoyed the natural outdoor space beyond the cottage it would be nice if the courtyard belonging to the cottage was tidied up a little bit. Some of the director chairs are broken / bit tired and the area could do with a clean up. The chaisee more
Whilst we enjoyed the natural outdoor space beyond the cottage it would be nice if the courtyard belonging to the cottage was tidied up a little bit. Some of the director chairs are broken / bit tired and the area could do with a clean up. The chairs are also super heavy. We took them out to sit on the grassy banks outside the cottage but a few lightweight deck chairs would be better for this purpose. The seating area around the blue table on the mound is also very overgrown and disappointing as this would be an amazing place to sit and have drinks / dinner if tidied up.

Saw seals from the groyne hide and eider ducks along the lane. had a few trips in to the Lake District. Our first visit to this area. Very beautiful scenery within easy driving distance. |

We had an amazing stay. Everything was a truly magical experience.
Everything had been taken care of, from the TVs to the binoculars. We made great use of the Sonar system, waking up to the music was great! Standing at the window and watching the see more
