Description
North Lodge is a stunning, fully refurbished historic property, nestled on the edge of Cockermouth in beautiful Cumbria.
Welcoming up to six guests across three king-size bedrooms, the interiors are elegantly styled using reclaimed materials for a decadent boutique finish.
Relax and enjoy your holiday in beautiful surroundings, both inside and out, for the ultimate luxury escape.
As you enter in through the front porch, there is plenty of space for boots and outerwear. A classically tiled entrance hall takes you through to a gloriously welcoming living room - "The Snug" - offering warm earthy tones and generous plush sofas to sink into. This space is perfect for spending relaxed evenings with a good book or enjoying board games with family.
There is also an additional living area or morning room, with double aspect windows making for a wonderfully light space. Here there is another sofa, a casual table to seat two looking out over the gardens, and a period fireplace with traditional wood-burning stove and plenty of logs to get you started. The vinyl record player with a good selection of old records is also a nice touch which guests will enjoy listening to.
The kitchen is traditionally stylish with a luxury heritage feel, having a modern range oven with gas burners, Belfast sink with swan-neck mixer tap, and charming reclaimed tiles to complement the wooden cabinetry. It is very well-equipped, having everything necessary to cater to any culinary occasion including a cafetiere and large, bialetti-style stovetop espresso maker for the coffee-lovers. There is also a handy dishwasher, washing machine and condenser dryer.
Past the kitchen, there is a fine conservatory with the main dining table to seat six. A splendid space to eat, it has a high ceiling, skylights, pared back neutral décor, and patio doors out to the gardens.
Upstairs, the bedrooms are all beautifully dressed, each with their own style and all with ample space and storage. The master bedroom has a king-size bed, while the second and third bedrooms are also king-size, and the beds can be reconfigured to create twin rooms if desired. The main family bathroom is also upstairs, having a bath with shower over, wash basin and close-coupled WC. On the ground floor, there is also the additional benefit of having an additional shower room for convenience.
Outside, there is an extensive patio area and garden, complete with outdoor furniture and ample seating, ideal for dining al fresco after a long day of exploring the local area. The garden is enclosed with stock fencing, and has far-reaching views to the fields beyond, making it a beautiful setting in which to spend your time. Down a wooded path, there is a private riverbank that guests can enjoy taking a stroll along. Surrounded by woodland, it's a lovely spot for families to enjoy in all seasons.
There is plenty to do in the immediate local area, and being on the edge of the Lake District, it is renowned for excellent walking, hiking and cycling. There are a plethora of beautiful villages, attractions and welcoming pubs within the local area, meaning you will be spoilt for choice as to where to go first!
Cockermouth is a pretty Georgian town which has plenty of independent shops, pubs, restaurants and antique shops to spend a lazy afternoon in, while only a short drive away are all of the Lake District's northern lakes. For the more adventurous, there are plenty of kayaking and paddle-boarding opportunities on the water, while the Lake District Wildlife Park is also only a few minute's drive away for those with children. The Lakes Distillery and the National Trust's Wordsworth House and Garden also comes recommended.
The coastline is also within easy reach, being roughly a 15 minute drive over to Maryport with its sands, marina and Maritime Museum.
Fishing at North Lodge
North Lodge has been owned by the same family for generations and throughout its history has been occupied by fishermen thanks to its proximity to the River Derwent. The river provides excellent fishing opportunities, with many large, delicious salmon and wild trout.
The main fishing beat available to North Lodge guests is called Armathwaite. It is three quarters of a mile long and has fishing on both banks. It can accommodate up to 8 rods fishing if both sides of the bank are used. North Lodge has ten beats in total, both upstream and downstream of the property, each with its individual characteristics and features. Any of these can be booked in advance given enough warning.
Guests of all experiences can take the opportunity to enjoy fly fishing in the beautiful, tranquil locations along the riverbank. A team of ghillies are delighted to accommodate every level of ability, including beginners, and equipment and a picnic lunch will be provided upon request. In the right conditions, the river provides good runs of salmon throughout the summer and autumn. There is also excellent sea trout fishing in the summer months. We can offer plenty of sport for experienced fishermen (and women) as well as friendly tuition for beginners. The gillies will pick you up and take you to the most scenic and secluded spots on the river.
Spinning is allowed as well as fly fishing.
Please contact us for more information about this fishing opportunities and guided trips during your stay at North Lodge. We will be very happy to help arrange this for you.

Please note:
There is private off-road parking for 3 cars at the front of the property.

So kind to share such a clearly well loved family holiday home.

We loved it, especially the kitchen being so well equipped with the characterful adjacent dining room. The tiled floors are such a success giving a homely feeling to the entire house. Comfortable beds too!

The old house is beautifully designed and decorated (much praise to the owners), and the sense of home it has, the sense of place, of comfort, of a being a place to just “be” in, is rare indeed. Despite all the natural beauty to explore in the Lake District, I think I would have been perfectly happy just being on this property the whole time. In terms of getting out to see the Lake District, having a car may be best, as taking the bus about does eat up a fair amount of one’s day. That said, the bus stop is only about a 7 minute walk away, so quite easy. The town is also very close by, and has several good restaurants. If you are looking for a country cottage that embodies the best of ‘home’ and natural tranquility, this is the place.

My only criticism is the slow response time from the hosting company, and the general impersonal nature of it—typical wait for a response is a couple of days.

Over a period of three nights three different smoke alarms each went off for no reason (batteries)? This kept us and the kids up in the middle of the night three different nights. The managers asked us to replace the batteries ourselves but the local shop did not have the appropriate batteries. This required about a two hour project all told, and the problem wasn’t solved. On the other hand, when we alerted the managers that the toilet seat was broken in arrival they promptly addressed it.

If arriving in the evening the path between house and drive is unlit and has a few small steps, some small lights would help.

lovely place in lovely setting. the house is very nicely renovated and has a quirky layout. As we have some very young children the layout present some problems for just walking toddlers. it would be lovely for older childrencouples weeks s though. very cosy and we'll situated for the lakes.
