Description
Ellen’s Cottage is a beautifully presented, 17th century cottage located on Boardmans Farm, one of the oldest buildings in Hawkshaw dating back to 1707. The cottage is full of character but with all the modern requirements for a cosy stay. It's an ideal choice for the perfect couples getaway.
Ellen’s Cottage can be found up a quiet lane with no through traffic. The picturesque exterior with centuries of character is surrounded by beautiful gardens. The gardens are south-west facing over the landscape and have outdoor furniture where guests can soak up the sun in the summer before heading inside the rustic, cosy cottage.
On entering the cottage, the oak beams against the white walls oozes charm throughout, a grandfather clock setting the tone of this historic building. A log fire will warm those cold evenings, and a comfortable sofa to relax in sits off the stairs to the bedroom adjacent to the kitchen at the rear, well-stocked with all the amenities and utensils required to cook up a feast.
Up the stairs can be found the luxurious four poster double bed, enjoying countryside views to the south. The bathroom is equipped with a bath and shower, with complimentary amenities for your stay.
The local pub is only 1 mile down the lane to Hawkshaw Village, where you will find further amenities at the village store.
Ellen’s Cottage has parking for two cars. Please be aware the entrance to the property is down a single track lane.
Two well-behaved pets are welcome and should never be left alone in the property.

We loved looking out on the sheep and lambs in the fields from the cosy bedroom with its four poster bed and wonky beams. Sally, our host gave us a friendly welcome chat and settled us in with two pints of milk. The kitchen has everything you need, the bathroom has big fluffy towels and the television and wi-fi reception is excellent. Parking was easy and the garden was full of beautiful yellow irises. In the back garden is a seating area which would be great should the weather be warm and sunny. We were grateful that the central heating came on as the weather was chilly when we stayed. There are lights strung on the handrail leading down to the cottage which were helpful in the dark.
We would certainly recommend Ellen's Cottage and look forward to a return visit. |

The cottage gave us everything we needed and we thoroughly enjoyed our stay, so nothing needed improving as far as we were concerned.

Everything you could need for a lovely stay. Our dog enjoyed it too. Lovely pub at the end of the lane serving great food and beers.

We like the peaceful environment of the location, away from the hustle & bustle of urban life. Yet easily accessible to local amenities with 10-15 mins driveout or approx 45 mins to Manchester city centre. Place is clean, tastefully decorated and retaining much of the original structural & architectural designs. The 4 poster bed is extremely comfortable & we rested well throughout the stay. |

Ellen's Cottage in Hawkshaw was a lovely place for us to base ourselves in, down a narrow laneway in a quiet area with a great view. The Cottage had everything we needed. Next to the Cottage is a laundry with a washing machine and clothes drier. There is a great pub with delicious meals on the corner of Hawkshaw Lane and Bolton Street which operates Tuesday to Saturday. There is a Supermarket and Petrol/Service Station about 10 minutes away which operates 7 days a week. The laneway has quite large potholes in a few places and there are no street lights for night driving. There are a few stairs to encounter from the car park down to the entrance to the Cottage. Inside the Cottage is a steep and narrow staircase. On the left of a small landing is another step to get into a very large bathroom and on the right of the landing is a couple of steps to get into a very large bedroom. Heating upstairs and downstairs is on a timer but the Host will adjust the timer to your needs.

Lovely cottage in a beautiful location. Ellens Cottage is an old quaint, small stone cottage in the heart of the Lancashire countryside, yet close enough to get to all the major towns. On our first night we walked with our dogs (1mile) to the Waggon and Horses pub and had a lovely meal. The walk back was in the dark, and it is very dark, so bring a torch. The listing mentions pot holes in the road up to the cottage. They are not bad pot holes at all, I have driven on much worse main roads! It is a lovely cottage in a stunning location and we will hopefully be staying again.

It’s so far on the back of the street, clearer instructions on location would have been helpful. There were also cobwebs everywhere inside.

Lovely location.
Lovely location.

Some small features missing - no wood left for the fire, no independent control of heating, few cobwebs suggesting cleaning could be a little better, no reserved parking space near property, lighting outside property poor when arriving in the dark.

This cosy 17th century cottage has been sensitively restored and is in a beautiful setting. At the front is a tranquil sunny garden with silver birch trees and an expanse of green fields beyond. The small courtyard garden with table and chairs is a real sun trap. The stairs to the first floor bedroom and bathroom are short but steep. The kitchen is well-equipped and there was ample hot water for all our needs. The cottage is located a mile from the main road down a single-track lane that is uneven in places and there are few passing places. However, traffic seems quite sparse and most road users readily backed up to let us pass. The host Sally was very welcoming, friendly, helpful and speedily responded to our queries during the stay. Pubs and places in the area were mostly dog-friendly, and Sally provided a large tin of dog treats which were much appreciated by our pet, who clearly was very reluctant to leave at the end of our stay, as were we!

Stunning location and an olde-world property combine to make a great stay. Lovely hosts will look after you and make sure that all is well. Couldn't have asked for more and far better value than any local hotel. Definitely worth a stay if you are in this area and we will be going back.
